HERAT CITY (PAN): Eight border police officials have joined the insurgents in the Rabat Sangi district of western Herat province, official said on Sunday.
Manning a checkpoint in Gilacha area, the policemen escaped with the militants on Saturday evening, a government official said on condition of anonymity.
Citing initial information, he said the police had joined the rebels but the matter was still being investigated.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, said the policemen had also surrendered one light machinegun, five Kalashnikovs, a rocket-propelled grenade and ammunitions to the fighters.
