JALALABAD (PAN): Dozens of elders and influential figures on Monday staged a protest in the Noorgram district of eastern Nuristan province against the dismissal of 850 policemen.
They strongly condemned the interior ministry’s decision regarding the reducing of policemen in the province, a tribal elder, Malik Hassan Jan, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
If the decision was enforced, the entire province could be captured by rebels and Pakistan’s spy agents, he warned, stressing the reversal of the move.
In addition to the current police strength, more Afghan Local Police (ALP) and army soldiers were needed to ward off potential security threats to the far-flung province, he argued.
The presence of Pakistani Taliban in the border areas of the province and disruptive activities were largely linked to insufficient police strength in Nuristan, observed another protester, Zhamital Khan.
Governor Tamim Nuristani has warned most of the districts could fall to insurgents if the interior ministry fired policemen.
Taj Mohammad, a member of the provincial council, called on government to take serious measures to improve governance instead of reducing police strength.
