LASHKARGAH/ASADABAD (PAN): More than 30 insurgents have been killed in clashes with security personnel in Helmand and Nuristan provinces, officials said on Sunday.
At least 25 fighters were eliminated in Nad Ali and Greshk district of Helmand, police officer Col. Ismail Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News. Both incidents occurred late on Saturday.
In the Adam Khan area of Greshk, the militants stormed an Afghan Local Police (ALP) post, he said, adding reinforcements were sent to the site following the attack.
Fifteen rebels were killed in the 15-hour firefight, according to Hotak, who said police had seized six corpses of the Taliban. Five policemen were wounded in the fight.
Ten guerrillas were killed and five others captured alive during an operation by Afghan police and soldiers in Nad Ali district, said the governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak. Two policemen were injured.
Meanwhile, the Taliban claimed killing 20 ALP members and wounding a dozen others in the Greshk clash. The group’s spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, acknowledged the loss of only four fighters.
In eastern Nuristan province, six armed rebels and four security personnel were killed in an ongoing clash in the Barg-i-Matal district, the governor’s spokesman said.
Abdul Zahir Bahand told Pajhwok Afghan News the attackers, including Afghan, Arab and Pakistani extremists, stormed the town on Saturday evening. So far, four police and army soldiers have been killed in the firefight.
Deputy police spokesman, Col. Mohammad Farooq said six rebels were killed and as many others injured in the gunbattle. He added the fighters’ bodies were still lying at the scene.
