KABUL): Elders of the Ahmadzai tribe on Thursday called for the peace process to be accelerated, saying the tribe was ready to throw its weight behind the effort.
The tribe held a gathering under the title “Peace, Justice and National unity” at the Loya Jirga’s tent in Kabul. Political figures, tribal elders and a large number of Ahmadzai tribesmen attended the gathering.
Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, the Security Transition Commission chief, in his address to the gathering said that peace and stability could not be achieved with guns and swords.
“We need a sustainable peace which is linked to overcoming the current problems on a permanent basis and ignoring the past,” he added.
He suggested a national consultative jirga should be called into session in order to establish rules and appoint peace negotiators, while calling on militant groups to take part in the upcoming elections.
Another speaker, Ahmad Shah Ahmadzai, a former jihadi leader, said it was the duty of every Afghan to work for peace.
He said the government should seek assistance of impartial individuals in making peace with the armed opposition.
Coming hard on the High Peace Council, he said the president-created body involved no impartial person.
“The Ahmadzai tribe will work alongside other tribes to bring about peace and stability to the country,” he declared.
Wolesi Jirga member Shinkai Karokhel on the occasion urged the tribe to fully participate in the April 5 presidential elections.
