KABUL on Monday welcomed the ongoing process of registration for the 2014 presidential and provincial council elections, promising support in this regard.
“ISAF will support the process, as necessary and at the request of the Afghan government,” said Alexandra Taylor, deputy civilian spokesperson.
At a news conference in Kabul, she also hailed the recent approval of the electoral law and of the law regulating the structure, roles and responsibilities of the Independent Elections Commission and the Electoral Complaints Commission.
“These laws are a key step toward establishing a robust electoral architecture for Afghanistan’s presidential and provincial council elections scheduled for April next year,” the spokesperson remarked.
In response to a query, she said: “You will recall at the Chicago Summit last year the 50 heads of state and government … agreed the international community will support the training, equipping, financing and capability development of the ANSF beyond the end of the transition period.
“These funding mechanisms will be coherent and effective in cooperating with the Afghan Government. This is a clear commitment that has been made to the Afghan people and government.”
