TIRINKOT (PAN claimed their 20 prisoners escaped from a jail in central Uruzgan province on Sunday, but the jail authorities said only five juveniles were missing.
Jamuddin Andar, the jail in-charge in Tirinkot, the provincial capital, told Pajhwok Afghan News five juvenile prisoners were missing and believed to have escaped and that the incident was being probed.
But a Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, claimed their prisoners had successfully staged the jailbreak.
He said security forces had arrested the 20 Taliban on charges of being would-be suicide bombers and others, but they were able to flee on Sunday.
He said the escapees had reached a safe area after what he called the technical jailbreak.
An official at the provincial judiciary department, Rafiullah, said a wall of the jail had been broken from outside.
On Sunday when the prisoners were allowed to sit in the open, they fled through the hole, he said, but did not give a figure.
He said the fleeing inmates were aged between 15 and 18 years.
