KHOST CITY (PAN.
Khost IEC chief Shafiq Ahmad Wafa told participants of an awareness programme in Khost City that despite various efforts at encouraging women to obtain voter cards, their participation had been far from satisfactory in rural areas.
“The registration process has accelerated after 150,000 people were got engaged in awareness programmes,” he said.
Mubariz Mohammad Zadran, the governor’s spokesman, said there had been no hurdles to public awareness programmes in all districts.
Zadran insisted there was nothing to worry about in holding the elections across Khost.
Women’s Affairs Director Khawar Amiri said women’s participation had been lukewarm against their expectations. She said a limited number of registration centers could be a reason.
Registration centers have been closed in districts, but Amiri asked election officials to keep operational mobile registration teams so more women could be registered.
Currently only one voter registration center is operating in Khost City.
A resident of the city, Friba, told Pajhwok Afghan News women’s participation in the registration process had been pretty enough, keeping in view the existing security threats.
She suggested awareness efforts were needed to be continued so all women could know about the importance of elections.
Friba requested security officials to put in place tight security measures during the election process.
