PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): A number of police official in central Logar province have been sacked in an attempt to bring reform and efficiency to the force, the police chief said on Saturday.
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Brig. Gen. Abdul Hakim Ishaqzai accused certain central government functionaries of interfering in his affairs.
Azra and Kharwar district police chiefs, as well as three crime branch personnel, had been fired in the wake of a volley of public complaints against their conduct, he said.
Gen. Ishaqzai, who assumed charge three months ago, said the province previously had two parallel police headquarters, run by the police chief and his deputy. But now the system has been streamlined.
But he grumbled higher-ups were impeding his efforts to introduce reforms. Some people in the central government were out scuttle his agenda, the police boss said, without naming anyone.
The well-connected individuals, who had been appointed in violation of rules, were trying to foil reforms in the police force, Ishaqzai said. However, he vowed to purge the headquarters of the personnel who could bring bad name to the force.
Meanwhile, his deputy Col. Abdul Wali Toofan acknowledged the police headquarters had witnessed positive changes in recent months. Competent officials had been transferred to districts to ensure security, he said.
All roads across Logar had been reopened, instilling a sense of security among the people, Toofan explained. The road linking Azra district with the provincial capital had been closed for months by insurgents.
Provincial council member Abdul Khaliq Khairkhwa said their coordination with the police headquarters had improved as a result of the reforms, which had been welcomed by the masses.
