SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Around 2,000 livestock have died because of cold weather amid heavy snowfall in northern Jawzjan province while another 25,000 cattle were stuck in snow-hit areas of the province, nomads (Kochis) said on Monday.

“We have visited several times the nomads’ affairs department for help but of no help. We are not extended with the direly needed cooperation by the government amid cold waves that caused heavy financial loss on us,” they complained.

Ghulam Rasool, a representative of Kochis’ tribe in Dasht-e-Laili of Qushtepah district, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “Their animals died of heavy snowfall, cold weather and lack of food-stuff.”

Additional 25,000 cattle would die if sufficient food was not provided to the animals stuck already in mountainous areas, he informed.

Gul khan Mohmand, a resident of Faizabad district, said thousands of livestock were stuck in snow-hit areas.

But Jalat Khan Mohammadi, director of nomad’s affairs department, said they did not receive any information with regard of the tragic development otherwise he would have talked with the relevant authorities to find a solution.

Abdul Rahman Mahmodi, the governor’s spokesman, said they had no facilities in hand to assist the Kochis because they had faced unexpected heavy snowfalls. However, he assured to properly solve the nomads problems in the area.
