Low women voter turnout likely in Uruzgan

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Independent Election Commission (IEC’s voter turnout in central Uruzgan province in Saturday’s vote.

The concerns were expressed by IEC Director Abdul Hameed Sharifi at a seminar, attended by senior officials and civil society members.

Sharifi said only eight percent women had obtained voter cards, compared with 40 percent in other provinces.

Deputy Governor Sher Pacha Orguni asked religious scholars to encourage women to take part in the elections to strengthen the democratic system in the country.
