KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Five suicide bombers and three border police guards were killed after the bombers laced with guns stormed a logistical border police base in the Spin Boldak town of southern Kandahar province on Wednesday night, an official said.
The group attack involved five suicide bombers and it began at 8pm and continued until 9:30pm, said Zia Durrani, the provincial police spokesman.
The attack followed a car bombing at the entrance to the police base and then a fierce clash between the border guards and the armed suicide attackers.
Two of the attackers blew themselves up and the remaining three were shot dead by the police, Durrani said, confirming the death of three police personnel during the clash that lasted one and a half hours.
Suicide vests of those gunned down did not explode, the official said, adding a search operation in the area had been launched.
The governor’s acting spokesman, Dawa Khan Minapal, confirmed the casualties and said the attack also caused material losses.
The Taliban. The group’s spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, claimed the clash was still continuing and so far 38 security personnel had been killed.
But officials said the clash had ended with the killing of all the five assailants.
