WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): Young Afghan diplomats — currently on a training programme organised by the US and China — have urged Beijing to encourage Pakistan.
“We really want China to help us encourage Pakistan as a close friend to stop supporting insurgents,” Zuhal Salim, an Afghan diplomat, told reporters on the sidelines of a reception at the State Department on Monday.
“This is our main concern,” said Salim — the only woman in the 15-member delegation of young Afghan diplomats. “We know that China and Pakistan are very good friends. They have close economic ties.
“We really want China as our friend and neighboring country to encourage Pakistan to contribute to the security of Afghanistan and to have a real commitment toward fighting terrorism,” she added.
He colleague Ahmad Nawid Ariaye said: “I agree with her. China and Pakistan have strategic relations. These two countries are also our neighbours. We hope Pakistan, Afghanistan and China become united against terrorism.”
China attached importance to its relationship with both Afghanistan and Pakistan, Chinese Embassy Minister Wu Xi said, adding Beijing was working to promote peace and stability in the region.
“We would continue to work closely with Afghanistan and Pakistan for the promotion of peace and stability of Afghanistan and the region,” she said.
Counter-terrorism, she said, was an important component of Chinese foreign policy. “We certainly wish to make it more efforts with countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan in our efforts in combating terrorism,” Wu said.
