SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Eight militants were killed and several vehicles damaged during an predawn engagement in northern Jawzjan province, an official said on Saturday.
Provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani said the clash occurred last night when the insurgents attacked a police convoy in the Jangal area of Aqcha district.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News two policemen also died in the gunbattle, which left four militants and as many security personnel wounded. Some police vehicles were damaged.
But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed 17 people including the Qarqin district Police commander were killed in the ambush. He said 15 policemen were injured and nine Ranger pickups destroyed.
Shafi, a resident of the area, said the firefight lasted three hours until 2.00am. “Both sides used heavy weapons. Windowpanes in nearby houses were broken and doors damaged.”
