KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): A two-day cricket training camp involving hundreds of schoolchildren concluded in the capital of northern Kunduz province on Thursday.
Jointly sponsored by MCC, the Chinese state-owned mining giant, and Afghan Connection, a UK-based charity, the camp was run by Afghan Youth Cricket Support Organisation.
Former national cricket team player and AYCSO founder Raees Ahmadzai told Pajhwok Afghan News 420 students from schools in Kunduz City and nearby districts took part in the training session.
He said the camp participants were taught preliminary techniques and rules of the game and were trained how to bat, bowl, field and catch. The participants were also given away necessary cricket equipment on completing the training, he said.
Cricket board official in the northern zone, Dr. Noor Alim Farid, praised the organisation for holding the camp in Kunduz. However, he said the two-day event would not achieve the desired results and such camps should continuously be arranged.
A participant of the camp, Hamza, a 16-year-old, said they were taught preliminary techniques, which were beneficial. Ahmadzai said they had trained hundreds of boys in a number of provinces so far.
