Senators accuse unity govt of nepotism

KABUL (Pajhwok): Some senators on Sunday accused the government of appointing individuals based on political, party, ethnic and regional connections.

One of them, Luthfullah Baba, who represents eastern Nangarhar province in the Meshrano Jirga, told the house that most of the people recently appointed to government positions happened to be campaigners of the two doctors (President Ghan and CEO Abdullah Abdullah).

He said the Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Wednesday appointed Ebadullah Talwar as the deputy provincial police chief for Nangarhar, replacing Brig. Gen. Lutfullah Zaryab.

But Zaryab was reappointed as the deputy police chief replacing Talwar within 24 hours, he said, asking for the move to be questioned.

He said mismanagement and nepotism contributed to insecurity, corruption and frustration of the youth.

He said no one was listening to the voices of local people and posts at each department were being distributed on the basis of political affiliations.

Another lawmaker Farida Kuchi.

She called for the former Kunduz governor, Omar Safi, and the provincial National Directorate of Security (NDS) chief to be sentenced to death for negligence in their duties.

She said it was shameful for ministers to have having no authority in maintaining security.

She said appointments were made against merit, it would prevent the youth from leaving the country.

“Unfortunately, people are being recruited against political, personal, party, ethnic and regional relations,” remarked Mohammad Alam Ezedyar, first deputy chairman, who presided over the session.

“The ministers should not come under influence and they should be authorised to consider merit in appointments,” he said.

Both leaders of the government should be realize that recruitments on the basis of political relations would widen the gap between the people and the government, he said.
