KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Thirty-six insurgents including foreign nationals have been killed and a dozen others wounded during an operation in the Dasht-i-Archi district of northern Kunduz province, officials said on Saturday.

The district was fallen to Taliban fighters on June, 22, 2015 when the militants forced their way inside the district centre, but recently Afghan forces launched operations to retake the town.

During a press conference, the provincial police chief, Qaseem Jangal Bagh, said Chechen, Uzbek, Tajik and Pakistani fighters were among 36 militants killed and a dozen others wounded during Friday night operations by Afghan security personnel in the district.

Two security personnel were also killed and nine others sustained injuries in the clashes, he said.

The central parts of the district are in the control of security forces, but the gun battle is going on in the remote parts of the district, he added.

However, the spokesman for the second brigade of the Afghan National Army (ANA) in Kunduz, Maj. Ghulam Hazrat Karimi had said on Friday that they completely re-captured the district, but Taliban had rejected the claim as baseless.
