JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The primary court in Behsud district of eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday handed down death sentence to a man for killing eight members of a family in December.

Omara Khan was awarded the capital punishment during an open trial, two days after President Ashraf Ghani said he himself was following the case.

The family of eight, including children as young as two months and five years old, had been found mysteriously dead in their house in Mirzad Qala area in December. The dead included Yousaf, his mother, wife and five children, including four daughters and one son.

Head of the primary court and the investigation delegation, Justice Mohammad Zahid, after hearing both sets of arguments, announced that Omara Khan had been found guilty of the murders.

“You, Omara Khan, resident of Zazi Aryub district of Paktia, is awarded the death penalty by this court for killing Yousaf and his seven family members,” the judge announced, but declared the judgment was not final and could be challenged in the appellant court.

A relative of the slain family, Hakima, after the court verdict, told Pajhwok Afghan News that: “The whole world saw how brutally he (Omara Khan) killed the entire family. I am very happy that the killer is awarded death penalty.” She urged the authorities concerned to hang the convict as soon as possible.

The convict, Omara Khan, denied his hand in the murders, but a few days ago he was seen confessing to his crime in a video clip released by the governor’s house.
