KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): International troops will soon hand over their facilities at the Kandahar Airfield to Afghan security forces, the governor’s spokesman said on Friday.

Samim Khpalwak told Pajhwok Afghan News a delegation of the Civil Aviation Department, led by its deputy head Mahmood Shah Habibi, was given the assurance during a visit to the airport.

After the visit, the delegation shared the details with Governor Humayun Azizi, according to the spokesman. NATO troops would transfer their installations to the Afghans in the near future.

The airport would be expanded and training courses arranged for its staff, Habibi promised, announcing the establishment of an aircraft maintenance workshop.

While stressing the utilization of the facilities, Governor Azizi called for urgent steps to wrest back the state-owned land around airport, grabbed by strongmen.
