9 insurgents, 7 police perish in ongoing Uruzgan firefight

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): At least nine Taliban and seven policemen have been killed during an ongoing clash in central Uruzgan province, officials said on Sunday.

The clash erupted between the militants and police on Saturday night in Charchino district, the town’s police chief, Wali Dad, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“Last night, the insurgents attacked the police four times and two of the assaults were pushed back. The attackers are closing in on the district,” he said.

Wali Dad added the Taliban had captured 12 security posts so far and if police were not reinforced in the area of ammunition, the district would soon collapse.

At least seven policemen have been killed and eight others wounded in the ongoing gunfight and the injured were evacuated to hospital.He said 11 Taliban fighters were also killed and nine others wounded.

The Taliban confirmed the clash, with the group’s spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi saying the fighters had so far overrun 10 security posts.

At least seven policemen were killed and several others wounded in the clash, he said, adding the fighters had also seized weapons and ammunition.
