Taliban struggling after Mansour’s death: Gen. Nicholson

KABUL’s Balochistan province, the top US commander in the country has claimed.

Mullah Mohammad Akhtar Mansour was eliminated in a May air raid in Noshki area, an attack that drew a strong protest from the government of Pakistan and prompted Taliban to stay away from peace talks.

US Army General John Nicholson told journalists in Kabul late on Saturday there were signs that some of the funds provided to the insurgent movement had been disrupted. However, he did not go into details.

In response to a query, he said Afghan forces were suffering increasing casualties this year when an unprecedented numbers of policemen and soldiers were killed and wounded. 

Without giving specific figures, he said: “This year, we’re seeing more tactical success (by the Afghans) on the battlefield but more casualties as well. It’s in a defensive posture … that most of the casualties are occurring.”

Afghan forces have been able to recruit new fighters despite the high casualty rates, the general acknowledged. He believed the losses could be addressed by retrain them in southern Helmand province.
