LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Sixteen Taliban militants were killed on Sunday during airstrikes by Afghan security forces in two districts of southern Helmand province, an official said.
The Afghan Air Force (AAF) personnel carried out airstrikes on Sunday before noon in Zafran area of Sangin district, killing 10 Taliban militants and injuring six others, Maiwand Military Corps spokesman in the province, Lf. Mohammad Rasool Zazi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the same forces targeted a Taliban centre in the Marja district at about 11am on Sunday, killing six people. He said weapons and ammunition belonging to the rebels were destroyed in both the airstrikes, with civilians escaping unharmed.
The Taliban have said nothing about the airstrikes. But their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the fighters killed three security personnel during an attack on Saturday in Nad Ali district.
Helmand remains the most insecure province, where the Taliban are in control of several districts including Musa Qala, Nawzad, Baghran and Deshu.
