BAMYAN CITY (Pajhwok): Participants of an opinion poll on Sunday asked the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) to publish the names of those involved in human rights violations in order they are brought to justice.
Organized by AIHRC in central Bamyan province, the poll was attended by ulema, Daikundi and Ghazni provinces.
The rights commission organized similar events in all its provincial offices on Sunday.
AIHRC official Mohammad Musa Mahmodi told the gathering in Bamyan city that their views and suggestions would be incorporated in the commission’s next five- year strategic plan.
He asked different segments of the society to share their views, suggestions and assessments with AIHRC about its performance.
Bamyan Governor Mohammad Tahir Zuhair, who also attended the program, said: “Unfortunately human rights violations and corruption in this country have been ongoing over the past four decades and they were repeated again and again.”
Though the national unity government has worked fighting corruption and human rights violations, but the violations still continued on a high scale, he said.
Reforms could be applied if the public strongly supported them and reacted to human rights violations and if the government strengthened relations with the people, Zuhair concluded.
Ibrahim Tula, a civil society activist in Bamyan, said:“Unfortunately the AIHRC is yet to publish the names of human rights violators so the people know about them.”
He said naming human rights violators would help take them to justice as the public would press the courts and the move would reduce crimes in the country as well.
The participants suggested that the AIHRC should prioritize revealing human rights violators and sharing their list with the media.
