Baghaln sugar factory closed after shortage of raw material

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): The Baghlan Sugar Mill has been closed after 79 years due to the lack of raw materials, but its workers stressed over the resumption work in the factory.

The Baghlan Sugar Mill was the first sugar producing factory in Afghanistan which was established in 1941 with the support of Germany.

The factory was functional till 1991, but stopped working due to civil war in the country. In 2016, the factory was again made functional with the support of Germany and continued producing sugar till now but according to officials the Sugar Mill stopped working due to the lack of raw materials.

Some factory workers have gathered in front of the factory building on Tuesday and demanded the revival of the factory.

Ahmad Shah, one of the protesters, said all equipment in the factory were functional but due to the lack of proper administration the work had been stopped.

Ghulam Sakhi, head of the factory, told Pajhwok Afghan News they faced the lack of raw materials issue from the past two years.

“The amount of beet we needed was not supplied and today the factory was formally closed,” he said.

It is worth mentioning that farmers in Baghlan cultivated beet on 2.5 acres land and supplied it to the factory but there was decline in the cultivation of beet recently.
