PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): At least 56 militants of Taliban’s red unit have been killed in a security operation in the Azra district of central Logar province, but Taliban rejected the claim as baseless.
Hamidullah Hameed, the district’s administrative chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that commando forces carried out the operation late on Friday.
He said 56 of Taliban’s red unity were killed and 18 others wounded in the military sweep. “The militants had besieged the district over the past 20 days.”
Ahmad Shakeel Tasal, spokesman for the 4th brigade of 203rd Thunder Military Corps, told Pajhwok dozens of rebels were killed and several others wounded in the ANA operation in Azra district.
He said three commanders of the red unit –Sher Zaman, Farooq and Mohibullah -- were among the dead.
Lal Gul, a resident of the district, said one airstrike targeted Taliban insurgents on Friday when 26 rebels were killed and some others wounded.
On the other hand, the Taliban rejected the claims. The group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, denied casualties among the fighters in Azra.
