KABUL is of great importance to the region, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov says.

Speaking at an international forum in Ashgabat on Tuesday, the Turkmen leader promised his country would do all it could to create the necessary conditions for dialogue on peace in Afghanistan.

The Trend news agency quoted him as saying: “There is no alternative to negotiations. Previous experience has shown the use of power is counterproductive...”

He said Turkmenistan had been extending economic and humanitarian support to Afghanistan in various areas, including healthcare and education, supply of electricity and training of Afghan students.

“We will continue to work on different projects and are ready to expand cooperation with international organisations on rendering comprehensive support to Afghanistan,” the president added.

Ashgabat is working on projects involving Afghanistan, such as the construction of a railway line and gas pipeline.
