KABUL of Courage (IWOC) award.
The award is expected to be conferred on a number of women from different parts of the world by the US Department of State today.
Zarifa Ghafari is a resident of Maidan Wardak province. She received her primary education in capital Kabul and got a bachelor’s degrees in economy in India.
She launched a radio station ‘Pighla’ focusing on women’s lives in Maidan Wardak province and created Afghan Women’s Cooperation Foundation.
Ghafari, 27, was appointed as Maidan Shahr mayor in an open competition last year. She was also member of the youth parliament for two years.
US Department of State says IWOC Award recognizes women around the globe who have demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment, often at great personal risk and sacrifice.
A number of Afghan women in the past have received the award.
