MAIMANA (Pajhwok): At least eight security personnel, including a district police chief, have been killed in clashes with militants in northern Faryab province, an official said on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Abdul Karim Yourish told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban stormed security check-posts in Qarmaqol district on Tuesday night.

He said that four security forces, including district police chief Safar Raees Baidar, were killed in the overnight assault.

He added the insurgents also suffered casualties but exact figures were not immediately available.

Baidar was one of Marshal Dostum’s close aides. Sultan Mohammad Sanjar, the administrative chief for Andkhoi district, said Dostum arrived in the district after the killing of Baidar.

A credible source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said five security personnel were killed, including an ANA soldier, and eight others wounded in the overnight clash.

He said two security personnel were killed and two others wounded as a result of clashes in Khwaja Sabzposh and Grezwan districts on Tuesday night.

He said a security guard of Faryab police chief had also been killed by a Taliban sniper.

The Taliban have not yet commented about the clashes.
