KABUL (Pajhwok): The Taliban have promised stout support for a four-nation natural gas pipeline project that has long been plagued by security concerns.
The assurance of support for the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline was held out by a Taliban delegation during a surprise visit to Turkmenistan (TAPI).
A news website reported there were indications of the Taliban visit having been brokered by the US, which has been supportive of mega gas project.
“We full support for the implementation and security of TAPI and other developmental projects in our country,” a member of the Taliban delegation told a news conference in Ashgabat.
Eurasia.net quoted Suhail Shaheen as saying on February 6 that the Taliban fully backed the implementation and security of TAPI and other development schemes in Afghanistan.
He unequivocally assured Turkmenistan the scheme would not be attacked and that the Taliban remained committed to ensuring its safety.
Shaheen added: “We are trying to contribute to the prosperity of our people and development of our country by providing protection to all projects.”
