KABUL (Pajhwok): The Biden administration is expected to assure NATO allies of consultations on major decisions, reports an international media outlet.
US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin would reiterate America’s commitment to the alliance at a two-day meeting of NATO defence ministers, beginning in Brussels today (Wednesday).
At the virtual meeting, Austin would send a supportive message on the continued relevance of NATO, the Pentagon spokesman said.
AFP quoted John Kirby as saying: “He (Austin) wants to revitalise our commitment to the alliance.”
Austin would underline the new administration’s position that “we’re better when we act together, that teams make us stronger and that collective security really is a shared responsibility.”
The ministers are expected to discuss, among other issues, the pullout of US troops from Afghanistan in early May — a decision on which the alliance was no consulted.
According to VOA, Austin will be trying to reset the frayed US-NATO relationship that remained strained under former president Donald Trump.
Ahead of the ministerial meeting, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg hinted at his desire to reset the US-NATO relationship.
