UNAMA mandate extended by 6 months

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Security Council has extended the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for six months.

The UN mission’s mandate was extended following the Islamic Emirate’s takeover of the country in mid-August.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was asked to report by Jan. 31, 2022 on strategic and operational recommendations for the mission’s mandate.

On Friday, the 15-nation council voted on a draft resolution extending the UNAMA mandate until March 17, 2022.

The resolution underlined the important role that the United Nations would continue to play in promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan.

It also called for stepped-up efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and the important coordination role of the world body.

The council said the effective delivery of humanitarian aid required all parties to allow full, safe and unhindered access, for the UN humanitarian agencies and other actors.

It went on to stress the need for combating terrorist outfits in Afghanistan, including those designated by the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015).
