704 addicts sent to Helmand jail for rehabilitation

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Over 700 drug addicts have been rounded up from different areas of Lashkargah City and sent to Helmand’s Central Jail for treatment and rehabilitation, prison officials said on Sunday.

Helmand Central Jail Head Bahauddin Atif said 704 addicts, including four women, had been brought to the facility. This also included some individuals who sold drugs.

He added soon after the Taliban took control, some 330 addicts were rounded up and sent to the jail for treatment. They would be freed and join families after recovery.

According to the rehabilitation method, Atif said every addict is kept in the prison for six months to completely recover but individuals involved in the supply of drugs would be imprisoned for one year.

Among the drug addicts, two teenagers Shamsullah, 13 and Rafiullah 15 said they started consuming drugs after the death of their father.

They said now they stayed in the prison with their uncle and they had completed most of their rehabilitation time and now they were feeling good.
