MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The first deputy defense minister says they are trying to train an army that can defend Afghanistan’s borders and people independently.

He made the remarks at the inauguration ceremony of the new commander of the Mazar Corps in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of northern Balkh province.

About two months after the fall of Afghanistan into the hands of the Taliban, Maulvi Atallah Omari was officially named commander of the Mazar Corps.

At the ceremony, Mullah Mohammad Fazil Mazloom, first deputy defense minister, said efforts were being made to train an army that would be able to defend Afghanistan’s borders and people independently.

He added that in order to maintain a strong and legitimate system, it is necessary to build and train a strong army.

“We will try to train an independent army, an army that is independent and whose presence in Afghanistan will not be influenced by anyone. Our army must be more independent and stronger than our neighbors,” he said.

According to him, the families whose members have lost their lives in the ranks of the Islamic Emirate should not be forgotten.

The deputy defense minister also said that the current government had not been given to them in charity, but it had been achieved through the sacrifices the youth.

Meanwhile, the newly-appointed commander of the Mazar corps, Maulvi Atallah Omari, said they would continue their efforts to build and train a regular army.

He said the war was over with the withdrawal of foreigners and it was time for the Afghan people to enjoy complete security.

“Our biggest dream now is to bring securityto all the people of Afghanistan, whether they are in cities or in the villages,” said Omari.

Balkh Governor Maulvi Qudratullah Abu Hamza also told the ceremony that the new system was made up of all the tribes of Afghanistan.

He called on army officials to provide the necessary Islamic training to the troops in addition to military training.
