TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Reconstruction work on a key bridge that connects hundreds of villages in two districts — Chora and Chinartu —has begun in central Uruzgan province.

The bridge known as Badwali is in the Chora district, which was devastated by floods five years ago.

Maulvi Nizami, director of public works, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the reconstruction work of the bridge had been started by the department’s technical team.

He added that the reconstruction of the bridge was started following repeated requests from the people and would be completed in the next few weeks.

He said the bridge would cost one million afghanis, which would be paid from the state budget.

Matiullah, a technical engineer for the construction of the bridge, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the bridge is nine meters long and four meters wide.

According to him, with reconstruction of the bridge, residents of hundreds of other villages between the two districts will also be able to travel.

Residents of the area are happy that the important bridge will be rebuilt after five years.

Nazir Ahmad, a resident of Chora, told Pajhwok Afghan News that people had to cross the river in the past, but now the problem would be resolved.

He called on the government to rebuild more bridges, roads and public places in the province that had been destroyed or damaged in previous wars.

Reconstruction work on the bridge between Chora and Chinarto districts begins just days after officials announced plans to rebuild government buildings and public facilities destroyed in the fighting.
