JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Intelligence officials in eastern Nangarhar say that 70 members of the Islamic State (IS) militant group have surrendered to security forces in the province.

Dr Bashir, intelligence chief of Nangarhar, said 70 IS members, including a number of children, had surrendered to their forces in the province.

He said that the militants surrendered through tribal elders’ mediation and had been pardoned by a decree issued by the head of the Islamic Emirate.

Local tribal elders said they mediated for the surrender of IS militants and decided to burn the house of anyone joining the group in future and expel them from the society.

Abdullah Jan, a tribal elder from Momandara district, said he had mediated to end fighting in the country and support a good government.

One of the surrendering men, Ismatullah, said that in addition to some local rebels, there were also members of IS who were Pakistanis, Uzbeks, Russians and people of a number of other countries in the area.

Another rebel, Saif-ur-Rehman, said that after seeing a number of evil and un-Islamic acts by IS, he decided to separate his way and join the Islamic Emirate.

A number of IS fighters in the province had previously also shunned their militant activities and joined the Islamic Emirate.
