TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Cleansing of canals has begun in central Uruzgan province, with workers being given Indian-aided wheat in return for work.
Cleaning of canals has been started by the Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock and laborers are given wheat under the food for work program.
Eid Mohammad, the agriculture director, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had started clearing canals in districts and Tirinkot, the provincial capital.
He added workers facing economic difficulties have been hired to clean canals and nullahs.
He said these workers would be given Indian aided wheat in return for their work and if the program was successful then in future all aids would be given in return for work.
According to him, each worker works from 8am to 12pm in return for 10kg of wheat every day.
The locals are happy that they have been provided with jobs and are being given wheat in return.
Mirab Mirajan, a resident of Tora Canal in Tirinkot, told Pajhwok Afghan News that 100 workers had been hired to clean the canals and he was happy to see them cleaning the canals and receiving help in return.
He called it a good move and said all the aid should be given in return for work so that both the services would be provided and people would be able to support their families.
The Uruzgan Department of Agriculture has provided jobs to people in exchange for wheat, while in the past government departments provided cash to people in exchange for work.
