MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The residents of northern Balkh province want the caretaker government to pay adequate attention to the reconstruction and safeguarding of the historical monuments.
They say the Balkh province was a culturally rich and historically important province that used to draw many foreign and domestic tourists. However, its tourism potential has decreased as historical monuments here are on the brink of vanishing.
Hafizullah Hafiz, a resident of Mazar-i-Sharif, said the province had several historical sites and the government must pay more attention to safeguarding such sites.
Nasrullah, another inhabitant, said in addition to the Mazar-i-Sharif Shrine, the province also had other historical sites as well.
He expressed grave concern over the destruction of these sites and urged the authorities to pay due heed to the reconstruction of these historical monuments.
Other inhabitants of the province held similar views, calling for the preservation of ancient sites in Balkh
Maulvi Zabihullah Noorani, director of information and culture, said a delegation recently visited the historic sites and devised a plan for the restoration of the monuments.
