GARDEZ (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Water and Power has launched a survey to construct nearly a dozen small dams in southeastern Paktia province, an official said on Sunday.
Engineer Mohammad Akram Paktinyar, head of the survey team, told Pajhwok Afghan News: "These 11 dams are being surveyed in Gardez, Ahmadabad, Zurmat and other districts. Four of them have been completed so far and the rest are being surveyed."
After completion of the survey, the Ministry of Water and Power would construct the reservoirs, he added. He said the small dams would locally irrigate farm lands.
Residents of the province expressed happiness over the launch of the survey to construct small dams.
Rahimuddin, a resident of Zurmat district, told Pajhwok Afghan News: "The survey of dams in some areas is underway. It is a good step and we hope work on the dams will be started soon after completion of the survey.”
He said drought had severely damaged their crops and such small dams were desperately needed to store water.
Paktia is a mountainous province where the possibility of construction of small dams exists in many areas to store water.
