Red eyes may indicate omicron infection: Health experts

KABUL (Pajhwok): Some medical experts acknowledge that red eyes is one of the Covid-19 Omicron variant symptoms.

Some media outlets also published reports in this regard, saying Covid-19 patients suffer from eyes redness.

A website BemaristanIbniSena in its article titled ‘redness of eyes’ a new and serious sign of Covid-19’ wrote that lately the signs of Covid-19 had been noticed in humans by the redness of patient eyes.

The source wrote symptoms related to the eyes of the coronavirus patients can include burning eyes, itchy eyes, photophobia (sensitivity to light), red eyes, eye pain, puffy eyes, swollen eyelids and watery eyes. Such symptoms tend to be more common in patients with severe cases of COVID-19.

Another website Homka wrote in its article titled ‘redness of eyes is one of the signs of individuals infected by Covid-19.’

It wrote after Covid-19 incursion in eyes, an individual would be infected with Covid-19 and that person could become an easy source of spreading the virus.

The article reads that redness, swelling and itching are Covid-19 symptoms affecting eyes.

Health experts acknowledge redness of eyes during Covid-19.

Dr. FaridullahUmari serving at Antani Hospital in Kabul City, said: “Research showed five percent of Covid-19 patients’ eyes got red during their illness. This is the sign of mild Covid-19 infection and after few days, it eradicates.”

He said sore eyes was a short lived phenomena. Covid-19 according to Dr. Umari affected several systems of human body such as digest, respiratory, neuron, heart and others.

He said: “Individuals suffering from Covid-19 and redness of eyes are advised to use an eye drops but this redness diminishes after sometimes and do not last forever.”

Dr. HashmatullahFaizi, Covid-19 Control and Training in-charge at Afghan-Japan Hospital, said individuals suffering from redness of eyes showed mild symptoms when they are hospitalized, the signs go away when patients get oxygen.

He said individuals suffering from the new Covid-19 variant showed red eyes symptom but not necessarily every individual had this symptom.

Health Ministry Spokesperson Dr. SharafZaman also acknowledged redness of eyes in some Covid-19 cases.

“We want our people to fully comply with the health guidelines of the Ministry of Public Health. Individuals suffering from Covid-19 should isolate themselves and refer to the hospital in serious condition.”
