KABUL (Pajhwok): Practical work on the Mes Aynak project in central Logar province will be launched soon, says an official.
The mining of the site with massive copper deposits would create jobs for many Afghans, the deputy minister of public works said.
Abdul Salam Makhdoom Sadat told a news conference here on Monday heads of the Mes-Aynak project and its human resource section recently met officials of the ministry.
At the meeting, Sadat added, the project officials promised providing job opportunities for at least 20,000 people in the near future.
In 2008, MJAM-MCC -- a Chinese company -- was awarded a contract to extract copper from the site for Afghanistan.
The project is significant for Afghanistan in terms of employment, training, revenue and infrastructure development.
The deputy minister said the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was in talks with several organisations on poverty alleviation in Afghanistan.
