KABUL (Pajhwok): Acting Higher Education Minister Maulvi Nida Mohammad Nadeem has said the Islamic Emirate would not accept anyone’s demands through pressure tactics.

The Ministry of Higher Education in a statement said United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) acting head Markus Potzel met with Nadeem.

Maulvi Nadeem said during the meeting that the Islamic Emirate, especially the Ministry of Higher Education, was committed to the rights of Afghans in the educational framework. He said they were trying to work for the development and prosperity of the nation by protecting Islamic and national values

The acting minister also said their opponents were criticizing the implementation of Islamic affairs on the pretext of higher education and using it as an argument for their nefarious designs.

“We are obliged to leave no place for them to criticize and also fulfill the wishes of the Afghans who sacrificed for the rule of the Islamic system and the implementation of Sharia rules in the country.”

He also said an independent Islamic system was now established in Afghanistan due to the sacrifices of Afghans and they would not accept anyone’s demands against Islamic principles.

Referring to recent decisions of the government, Maulvi Nadeem said: “The Ministry of Education and Higher Education have not decided to stop the education of girls completely, but delayed it due to external factors. We are trying to find a solution to the ongoing problems in the light of Sharia”.

For his part, Potzel said higher education of any country had a direct impact on the economic situation of that country.

He also promised cooperation in the development of Afghanistan’s higher education and shared his plan for girls’ education with the acting minister.

However, no details about the plan were mentioned in the statement. UNAMA has also said nothing in this regard.

However, on its Facebook page, UNAMA quoted  Potzel as calling for the urgent lifting of the bans in a meeting today with Minister of Higher Education Mohammed Nadeem.

Without elaborating, he said “Afghanistan is entering a new period of crisis”.

The caretaker government has asked all private and public universities to suspend women’s higher education until further notice before banning women from working in foreign and local NGOs.
