KABUL (Pajhwok): The UN secretary-general’s special representative for Afghanistan has called for continued global engagement with the caretaker Afghan government.
Roza Isakovna Otunbayeva, speaking at a UN Security Council briefing on Wednesday, called Afghanistan the “most repressive” country in the world for women’s rights.
The UNAMA chief lashed out at the interim government for banning Afghan girls from higher education and women from working for NGOs.
In a statement from the UN, she urged the international community to preserve “whatever political space exists” for frank discussions with the government in Kabul.
Amid worsening humanitarian and economic conditions across the country, she hoped all restrictions on Afghan girls and women would be lifted.
Bans on women and other restrictions could further impede humanitarian access to those most in need, the diplomat warned.
