JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Water and Energy has completed and put into service water supply projects costing 109 million afghanis in the Rodat district of eastern Nangarhar province.
At the projects’ inauguration ceremony, acting water and energy minister Maulvi Abdul Latif Mansour said the water schemes had been funded by the World Food Program (WFP).
He said the schemes in Rodat district consumed 109m afs.
He added: “The projects include a 33-meter long and one meter high water dam, a 735-meter long and two-meter wide water canal, cleaning and repairing of 900m canal, construction of a 12km road, 24 check dams, hundreds of meters retaining walls and small water reservoirs.”
The projects were implemented in Roghano, Qatarghi and Mirji villages of the district and 1409 people, including 130 women, were provided job opportunities.
Residents of these areas said they were happy with the completion of the schemes and demanded implementation of more such schemes.
Maulvi Ahmad Durani, a influential figure, appreciated the government and aid giving organizations for the schemes and asked MoEW to implement more such projects.
Meanwhile, officials said they were trying to implement more such projects in order to prevent drought in cooperation with aid giving organizations.
Nangarhar governor Syed Ahmad Banuri said there were places in Spin Ghar, Hesarak and Nazyian districts where dams could be built.
He added the newly-constructed small dams would irrigate crops and increase the underground water level.
