Suicide bombing rocks Turkey’s parliament

KABUL (Pajhwok): A suicide bombing occurred close to Turkey’s parliament and interior ministry on Sunday.

The bomber struck in the heart of Ankara hours before lawmakers were scheduled to meet at the nearby parliament building, The National reported.

According to the newspaper, two police officers were wounded in the explosion, which took place at around 9:30 am local time.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya called the explosion a terror attack. He said one terrorist blew himself up while another was “neutralised” by security forces.

Turkey’s parliament is to reconvene today following the summer break. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to address MPs later in the evening.

In botched coup bid in 2016, Turkey’s parliament was bombed by fighter jets. Hundreds of people were killed in the incidents.

Meanwhile, the Cumhuriyet newspaper reported police cordoned off the area and ambulances were sent to the scene.
