KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan Abdalyan and Sri Lanka will meet on Wednesday in the 3rd quarter final of the Asian Games in the Hangzhou city of China, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said on Monday.
The Afghan side led by Naib:
Gulbadin Naib (skipper), Mohammad Shahzad (wk), Afsar Zazai(wk) , Noor Ali Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Karim Janat, Shahidullah Kamal, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Farid Ahmad Malik, Nijat Masood, Qais Ahmad, Sayed Shirzad, WafiullahTarakhil and Zubaid Akabir.
The Hangzhou Asiad also marks cricket’s return to the Asian Games programme after nine years. After featuring at Guangzhou in 2010 and Incheon in 2014, the sport was dropped from the 2018 edition in Jakarta.
Like in 2010 and 2014, cricket at the Asian Games 2023 is being played in the T20 format.
The men’s cricket tournament at the Asian Games 2023 is being contested by 14 teams. Asian powerhouse India is fielding a cricket team for the first time at the continental meet.
India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan — the five top-ranking teams in the ICC T20I rankings as of June 1, 2023 — have been granted direct entry into the quarter-finals.
China is hosting the Asian Games, which commenced on September 23,and features more than 80 athletes from Afghanistan in 15 different sports, including cricket.
Mohammad Khalid Hotak and Nasratullah Habibi and Mohsen Rezaee have won bronze medals in wushu and taekwondo in these competitions.
