World Sight Day: Blind people want their problems solved

KABUL (Pajhwok): Celebrating the World Sight Day in Kabul, blind people on Sunday asked the government to support them and solve their problems.

The day fell on October 12 and today Roshandellan Vocational Institute celebrated the day by holding a program, in which speeches were delivered and poetic verses recited. Some blind students of the institute also performed their skills.

Noor Mohammad Faizi, head of Roshandelan Vocational Institute, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the purpose of celebrating the day was to ask the government and people in society to cooperate with blind people.

He added: “Addressing problems of disabled people is not only the duty of the Technical Education Department, but all charitable institutions and citizens of the country should play their part in this regard.”

“We want to have students from all provinces, while this institute is facing a shortage of classrooms and dormitories.”

According to him, there are 310 students in the institute, including 70 girls from first to sixth grades. They are taught by 15 female teachers.

He asked the technical education department to pay attention to solving the transportation problem of the institute.

Mohammad Rafi Qadir Sarbaz, a professor at the institute, mentioned existing problems and said fundamental works had not been done for the blind and disabled people and national and international institutions should pay serious attention in this field.

He added blind students should be given a share in foreign scholarships so they could also study abroad. He said blind students also faced problems in finding jobs.

He asked the ministries of education, hajj, telecommunications and Kabul Municipality to provide employment opportunities to the blind.

He also asked the Ministry of Public Health to help poverty-stricken blind people suffering from mental and physical illnesses.

Mohammad Omar Mohammadi, one of the students of the institute, asked the government to solve their problems so they have a bright future.
