FEROZKOH (Pajhwok): Twenty-two children died from malnutrition in the past nine months of the ongoing solar year in western Ghor province, an official said on Tuesday.

Dr. Mohammad Musa Ulfat, a children specialist in the Provincial Hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “There are different reasons such as diseases like measles, diarrhea or shortness of breath, lack of proper feeding of the child and also the lack of awareness of the families about breast feeding caused the children to suffer from malnutrition.”

Dr. Abdul Ahmad Noori, deputy head of the Public Health Department, said: “Over 700 children have suffered from malnutrition and 22 children died, the figures are on the raise comparing to the last year.”

He said last year a total 600 children suffered from malnutrition in which 20 died.

He said these children had died due to poverty, lack of awareness about the importance of Brest feeding or due to malnutrition.

Some families, who brought their children to the provincial hospital for treatment, said their children stopped eating and were weak, and for this reason they were admitted to the provincial hospital.

Khadeja, the mother of a child suffering from malnutrition, said: “We are from the Allah Yar district, our child is very weak, there was nothing at home to give him, than we brought him to the hospital and said it was due to malnutrition, thanks to the doctors they addressed our problems.”

Razia, is another mother who brought her child to the hospital, and said she came from the Pasaband district and her child suffered from malnutrition as a result of poverty.

She said: “In our village, the clinic is not good, the medicine is not of good quality, several times when I took it to the district clinic, it did not get better, I was told to take it to the center, I brought it here, now it is good, the doctors take care of it well.”
