Facilitate trade via Torkham, Pakistan govt urged

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The government of Pakistan has been asked to facilitate trade with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries via the Torkham crossing.

The Khyber Chamber of Commerce and Industries chief said the Torkham route was being used for trade with Afghanistan, Europe and Central Asian republics.

Syed Jawad Hussain Kazmi told journalists at the Landikotal Press Club on Saturday that Pakistan earned a lot of revenue from trade-related taxes at the key crossing.

Pakistan’s exports via Torkham had slumped, inflicting losses on businesspeople, Kazmi said, adding they were trying to get facilities for traders.

Seeking tax exemptions for the people of the former tribal region, he opposed the harsh conditions imposed on trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
