KABUL (Pajhwok): World Food Programme (WFP) says it urgently needs 760 million US dollars to continue its operations in Afghanistan for next six months.

WFP wrote on its X handle: “16 million people do not know where their next meal will come from. Four million children, breastfeeding & pregnant women are malnourished.”

Earlier, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) had sought 3.06 billion US dollars to assist needy people in Afghanistan in 2024.

The office had said 23.7 million people needed life-saving assistance and humanitarian partners have prioritized 17.3 million people to receive well-coordinated multi-sectoral assistance in 2024.

Drought, natural disasters, poverty and hunger, unemployment, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the return of more than half a million Afghan migrants from Pakistan have increased the need for humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.
