KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan on Friday welcomed the decision of Norway, Ireland and Spain to recognize a Palestinian state next week as ‘a positive step’, demanding urgent measures from the international community to stop the genocide in Gaza.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan in a statement said it welcomed the plans announced by Norway, Ireland and Spain to recognize a Palestinian state next week, a move that is likely to bolster the global Palestinian cause and strain relations between Europe and Israel.

The ministry added: “This development comes amid the Zionist occupation. In addition to usurping the historical territory of Palestine, the Zionist regime is trying to change the population by committing the genocide of the Palestinian nation in Gaza.”

The ministry said the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan once again called on the international community, especially Islamic countries, to come up with urgent measures against the ongoing disaster in Gaza and discharge their responsibility towards defending the Palestinian nation.

Norway yesterday announced it wanted to recognize Palestine as an independent country amid media reports that Ireland and Spain will soon recognize Palestine.

Earlier, Qatar and Turkey and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation also welcomed the decision of Norway, Ireland and Spain.
