HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The governor of western Herat province and Turkmenistan’s consul general in the province have discussed expanding economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, transit routes and the Herat-Torghundi railway project.
The Herat governor’s media office said on X today that Governor Sheikh Maulana Islam Jar met with Turkmenistan’s Consul General in Herat, Batur Yolov.
The statement said the meeting covered increasing economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, expanding transit routes, the Herat-Torghundi railway project and the transmission of electricity from Turkmenistan to Farah province through Herat.
Islam Jar said transit and trade between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan through Torghundi had increased, adding that expanding the route could play an important role in strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
He described the Herat-Torghundi railway project as important for Afghanistan and the region, saying it could connect the northern and southern parts of the region and create new opportunities for regional trade and transit.
Islam Jar added that the Herat local administration provides customs and related services at Torghundi around the clock. He expressed hope that Turkmen authorities would also increase their cooperation and activities at the port.
The Herat governor also discussed the transmission of electricity from Turkmenistan to Farah through Herat, saying local authorities had paid particular attention to the issue.
Yolov said the issues discussed during the meeting would be followed up and conveyed to relevant authorities in his country.
He added that comprehensive efforts would be made to increase transit and trade through Torghundi and that cooperation between the two countries in this area would continue.
